Overfishing song by Japanese director, Akiko McQuerrey

The 8th of June was the World Ocean Day. As Japan is an island, we have to live with the ocean, in a good way and a bad way. Traditionally, Japanese people have been fishing for living and fish are their main nutrition. However as the technology has advanced, their way of fishing has changed. They no longer go fishing with men and fishing nets but with a monster-looking machine to dig out everything from the seabed.

Akiko McQuerrey is a Brooklyn-based Japanese director, designer, animator and puppet maker. She made this animaton, Overfishing Song. Listen to the octopus singing sadly.

Actually this song made me remember a scene of the film, Finding Nemo. "Fish are friend, fish are friend". Oh, but I love fish…. dilemma…

Fish are so delicious, we can’t stop eating them. Let’s eat delicious 100yen sushi. This film celebrates fish giving up their lives for us. Thank you fish. Itadakimasu. Many more fish in the sea if whales don’t eat them all.

Thank you Andrew for your comment. “Thank you fish” is perhaps one way of thinking. I just thank for fish, fishermen and the chefs.
